Commercial litigation: premium in London

Clifford Chance LLP

Complimented for its 'blend of experience and specialism in complex international disputes', Clifford Chance LLP's 'sensational' commercial litigation team handles a full range of high-value disputes, often with a cross-border element. Jeremy Kosky leads the corporate and commercial litigation practice, while Julian Acratopulo (who is described as 'a marlin spike capable of disentangling the threads of the knottiest legal problems') heads the international commercial litigation group. With experience across a range of sectors, clients include global media organisations, technology, engineering companies and financial institutions. For the latter Helen Carty and Christopher Yates are key contacts, while for M&A disputes, Maxine Mossman is a name to note; Kelwin Nicholls and Claire Freeman are both experienced in disputes with a civil fraud angle, and the 'extraordinarily bright' senior associate Haafiz Suleman is highlighted for cybersecurity litigation. The group has continued to grow its partnership ranks with the promotions of Stephanie Huts and Christopher Ingham , who excel in insolvency and insurance disputes respectively.

Clifford Chance does not just talk its clients’ language, it taught them it.

The blend of experience and specialism in complex international disputes and their ability to grasp complex technical issues really sets this team apart from the rest. I found their approach to be highly pragmatic, focused on the important outcomes and they did not get distracted by irrelevant details.

Clifford Chance’s London commercial litigation practice is nothing short of sensational. It’s resources are seemingly limitless, and the breadth and quality of its expertise is awe-inspiring. There is literally no time, day or night, when the machine is not producing high quality work, and one is left in no doubt that you are their first and foremost client.

‘Julian Acratopulo is a stand-out individual. He is the perfect partner and the one that you want on your case. He is great at making strategic decisions and guiding the client. He also has a detailed understanding of the case. He knows what questions to ask and how to motivate his legal team to deliver a great result. Kelwin Nicholls is very clever, has outstanding expertise in banking and financial services matters and is completely calm even in the most pressured environments. He has incredible experience of how to handle the most complex matters. When others are losing their heads, he will not lose his.’

It was a pleasure to work with Matthew Scully, Anne Collins, Haafiz Suleman and their team. One of the most collaborative teams I have come across, they worked hard and communicated very well throughout the case, making it feel like we were one team. Professionally they showed a deep understanding of the technical facts of the case and were very reliable. They were also very approachable. Working together has been an enjoyable experience and I have no hesitation in recommending them to others.

Julian Acratopulo is a marlin spike capable of disentangling the threads of the knottiest legal problems and laying them before you with a clarity you will have never seen before. Angela Morris is too good for her own good, getting things done before anyone realised they needed to be done. Samantha Ward is the Dorothy Parker of commercial litigation whose wit enlivens those with whom she’s working no less than it terrifies her opponents.

‘Philip Hill : a truly exceptional litigator, with a superb mind and outstanding tactical nous. The first choice for many clients, and rightly so. James Cranston (senior associate): one of the finest associates in London; quite outstanding.’

‘Haafiz Suleman is a star individual, and will, without doubt, go far. He is extraordinarily bright, hard-working and always ‘on it.’ I am amazed how readily he is able to pick up particularly difficult, technical points of law and analysis, particularly in areas where he has no previous experience. He is an out and out litigator, and fights his client’s corner every step of the way.’

Stewarts is a dispute resolution firm which advises across the full spectrum of disputes. I work closely with Lucy Ward and her team of associates. I think the key strengths are extremely strong technical expertise in the English courts, sensible approaches to billing, a small extremely hard working team working across an intricate subject.

Highly proficient and well-qualified team that works tirelessly for the client. Extremely efficient turnaround in submissions and responses. A standout feature is how well coordinated they are so that all members of the team are up to speed on the case. All members of the team including the most senior are readily available and responsive at all times. This is an exceptional firm with talented and very personable staff. Comprehensive use of technology is evident throughout with well organised document control and recall.

Competing with the best of the best.

Travers Smith LLP

'Battle-hardened from some of the biggest, longest commercial fights in recent years', Travers Smith LLP's 'outstanding' dispute resolution team is noted by one client to include 'some of the very best people to be in the trenches with'. For disputes arising from corporate transactions, Huw Jenkin and Andrew King are names to note. Heather Gagen is an outstanding partner. She never stops working – fighting hard for her client and obtaining exceptional results. Stephen Lee was excellent in the supporting partner role. Barney Stannard, Alice Child and Rachel Kitchman are amazing new partners. John Lee is one to watch in the future.’

Caroline Edwards is one of the best UK lawyers I have ever worked with. She is pragmatic, charming and very knowledgeable. She is able to manage her team members in an excellent way. Huw Jenkins is also a very good partner. He has an eye for every little detail and never gives up, even if the case is extremely difficult. I would also like to mention Tim Knight, who is an excellent associate with very good economic skills.

Rob Fell : he’s absolutely superb, and runs a team on a big case beautifully. He’s an incredibly experienced commercial litigator; clients love him; he’s an excellent lawyer, and he invariably produces outstanding results for clients. Ed Hardman: a terrific associate on whom one can depend entirely. He’s an excellent lawyer, he’s terrifically clever, and he’s a brilliant and invaluable team member. Top quality. Jarrai Jawara: an outstanding associate, and a total superstar of the future. Top quality.’

Travers occupies its own, distinctive space at the premium end of the commercial dispute resolution sector. The firm has a strong, winning personality, expressed through a really excellent, cohesive team of passionate, dedicated lawyers, battle-hardened from some of the biggest, longest commercial fights in recent years. They are some of the very best people to be in the trenches with.

What I value the most about the team is that they make you feel like they really care about you as their client and think carefully about your best interests. They engage as a team and work very closely together. Their work is exceptional and their advice is based on reliable analysis. You always know who is working on your case and they are all visible and engaged. It is nothing like in some of the other firms where the most senior partner only turns up at the beginning of the relationship but leaves as soon as you have signed the engagement letter and you never see him again.

Travers Smith’s disputes practice is outstanding. They can handle the toughest disputes, have really grown from strength to strength, and have been involved in some of the leading cases. Their lawyers are very clever, very hard-working and hugely collaborative. They are also very nice people and a pleasure to work with.

Jan-Jaap Baer: a seriously first-class litigator. Charming and understated in person, he’s fiercely intelligent and strategic, and devotes extraordinary energy to winning his clients’ cases. Huw Jenkin:  passionate, experienced, and incisive – a superb lawyer and a joy to work with.

Stephanie Lee, partner: a real star. She’s effortlessly on top of the detail, extremely smart, and imperturbable in even the fiercest fight. Andrew King, partner: vastly experienced and cuts straight to the chase. A real master at handling difficult cases (and clients). Rob Fell: a superb leader of his world-class team. Has very well-honed instincts and is always deeply reassuring to have on your side. Polly Richard: the least surprising partner pick since Steph Lee, a serious future star. Toby Robinson, partner: diligent, determined and with huge reserves of energy.

Enyo are an outstanding litigation boutique: they are very strong both tactically and strategically. Compared to other firms I have worked with they have a particular strength in identifying the winning points/approach and (critically) selling it to the client. They therefore start trials in the strongest possible position.

Boris Telyatnikov – Boris is a highly intelligent litigator, with good tactical sense and commercial judgement. He is also a pleasure to deal with. Tim Elliss is similarly a very good technical lawyer as well as sensible. I would have no hestitation in recommending him. Georg Stiegelbauer is more junior but very promising.

I have been particularly impressed with Edward Allen, whose tactical judgement is (in my experience) second to none amongst solicitors. He also has the ear of his clients, and can sell them the right strategic approach to a case, even if it cuts across their preconceptions. I would also strongly recommend Lucinda Orr – she is a class act, who knows everyone in the Court system and can keep even the most complex cases on the road.

‘ Tim Ellis is quite simply class-leading. Whip smart and single-minded.’

‘Simon Twigden and Pietro Marino are both brilliant.  I have worked with George Maling and Richard Levett who are both exceptionally able. Olivia Gare is a very good associate.’

‘Boris Telyatnikov – is unique and has amazing knowledge of the Russian and non-Russian market that makes him highly sensible not only for legal issues, but also for project management.’

Enyo is an incredibly exciting firm. Although they were formed nearly 10 years ago they have retained the energy that marked them out when they formed. Because they are essentially non-transactional they are much less hampered by conflict. Because they are focused on litigation they are incredibly skilful and energetic litigators. In a word they are “cool”.
