Competition and antitrust

With a dominant presence in merger control matters and contested M&A transactions, Galicia Abogados S.C. remains a key leader in competition law. The practice group’s scope additionally includes cartel investigations, leniency applications and complaints before COFECE, as well as a comprehensive understanding of judicial proceedings related to antitrust law and strategies to best handle high-stakes contentious matters. Its stellar client list – comprising multinational companies across various industries, notably banking, energy and pharmaceuticals – is attended by a deep bench of expert practitioners and former competition officers with specialised expertise across multiple disciplines and regulated sectors. Christian Lippert has an enviable track record handling abuse of market dominance and cartel investigations, while Carlos Chávez also handles many of the group’s most complex competition and antitrust mandates. Additional leaders in the group include Juan Carlos Burgos, an expert in the competition challenges faced by the energy sector; and newly promoted partner Gerardo Rodríguez, whose experience spans a range of regulated industries. Moreover, the practice was further strengthened by the hire of Edgar Martín - formerly of Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aiza y Enríquez, S.C. - as counsel, in March 2025. Additional support is provided by highly active senior associates Daniella Ramírez and Maite Celorio. Since publication, Martín has been promoted to the partnership - effective as of February 2026.

Points forts

Acted as special Mexican legal counsel to a syndicate of commercial banks (Santander Mexico, MMBA Mexico, SMBC and Barclays) and two development banks (Nacional Financiera and Banco Nacional de Comercio Exterior) in the aggregate financing of US$6,200’000,000 to a special purpose trust, managed by Mexico Infrastructure Partners, that was specifically created for the acquisition of twelve project companies and associated service entities previously owned by the Iberdrola Group in Mexico.
Acted as lead counsel to Grupo Sordo Madaleno on the acquisition of Proyecto Expansión Antara, a 90,000 m2 mixed-use development comprising retail, office and hospitality space, along with the existing 50,000 m2 Antara retail project in operation since 2006.
Acted on behalf of TJX in the negotiation of the corresponding agreements and led the efforts for getting the antitrust clearance.
